During a culinary tour through Ehrenfeld, our guide walked us to a former industrial factory with a huge lighthouse. Behind this building, near the railroad tracks, we discovered a small colorful entrance to a hidden place - Les Boites. Inside, Rainer and Anja, the owners welcomed us with these wonderfully delicious boards and told us the story of their shop. Already curious? So was I.
Anja is an object Designer and metal smith, while Rainer is a culinary scout. Together they promote a healthy life style in healthy environments. In the fourth floor you can find the showroom for their natural colors, beds and floor covers, but if you go down to the first floor you will find the core of the Les Boites: the "conserverie", the vinyl shop and the color shop. Why is it called Les Boites? It comes from French and it means can. Here you can find food cans, such as the famous french sardines, color cans incorporating natural paint and audio cans in the form of vinyls.
I was really fascinated by the culinary part of the shop. The philosophy behind the products is the following: They have to come from small shops that are working in a sustainable way and they must have a high quality level. Here you can find things that are not available in the supermarkets, which makes Les Boites a place of discoveries.
For example the sardines come from five fisher families on the french coast. A tasteful ajvar comes from a small town in Macedonia and the goat cheese from Belgium. From Austria comes the "Alpenkaviar" while the salami comes from Italy. Moreover they bake their own bread and add a personal touch to each meal. And the list can continue.
Here is a quick and delicious Les Boites recipe for two people on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Cook some hand made Italian Spaghetti, add garlic and a sardines can. Don't throw the oil away, just use it as sauce. Afterwards add some dill to make the taste complete. In the end you can spoil yourself with some french chocolate. Et Voila!
