Hi there!
On this weekend I made a short trip to an interesting city only 200km away from Cologne: Frankfurt am Main. Although I have visited this city in the past, I got to know it better this time thanks to the 10 km of walking through its streets.
On this weekend I made a short trip to an interesting city only 200km away from Cologne: Frankfurt am Main. Although I have visited this city in the past, I got to know it better this time thanks to the 10 km of walking through its streets.
Together with 3 friends on a sunny Sunday morning we left the city of Cologne and headed south on the A3 highway. On the way we passed Limburg, the place in which Franz-Peter Tebarz van Els, bishop of Limburg, renovated his parsonage with the church's money (31 mil. Euro). Meanwhile he quit his job and was called in audience in Rome by the Pope. Nasty. Anyway, after some time we arrived on the outskirts of the city and the sky-scrapers started to show their might.
Frankfurt is the city with the most sky-scrapers in Germany and stands on place 46 in the world, same as London, Las Vegas and Seattle summing a total of 14 huge buildings.
Our tour started near the main train station, the entry point in the central area. After we took some pictures with the huge Euro sign in front of the European Central Bank we headed to the Main Tower. The building is 200m high, has 55 floors and the elevator bring you up in less than 60 seconds. From the top platform you can see most of the city. And also the hundreds of planes that land on the nearby airport. The panorama offers views of the glass buildings, the old center, the river, the museum quarter and far away the suburbs.
After we walk around for a while we stopped in a small restaurant to eat a Frankfurterwurst with mustard and bread. Lecker! :D With our bellies full we went on to discover the old city. On our way we witnessed a protest against the war. Part of the crowd was an old lady that looked pretty tough on top of a rocket. Crazyyyy people!
In the old town you can find the cathedral and the Römer square, filled with houses in the specific architectural style. In front of the city hall stood a huge Christmas tree waiting to be decorated. The Christmas markets will start soon, so everything has to be ready. In Frankfurt you can also find an iron bridge with love padlocks.
We then visit the history museum and after a walk on the banks we left this amazing city and returned home. In our minds remained the contrast between the classic and modern, between the rich and the poor and between perception and reality.
By the way, today started the Carnival in Cologne, which last for only 1 day. The big party will take place in February. I'll return with details about this tradition.
Until then, Köllle Alaaf!
